Let’s Talk About Your Shoulders: Rehab 2 Perform Physical Therapy in Columbia, Maryland
Struggling with shoulder pain? Physical therapy can help you move pain-free and get back to what you love! Don't let discomfort hold you back—get started today! Located in Columbia, MD, across from Lake Elkhorn in Owen Brown.
I have never actually had a shoulder injury. But I’ve noticed over the years that one side I am more flexible on than the other. And ya know, that is very common, and not necessarily something you have to “fix”. To this day I don’t feel any discomfort, so it has never been something I have seeked support or treatment for.
But while thinking about deep stretching, or my general strength training, I do think about it from time to time. Like man, how much different would I feel, or be able to do, if my shoulder was a little more loose & flexible ?
It’s this mindset I want to shift to us moms. Because we so often push things under the rug, things that likely DO need attention. The reality is we often put our kids, family, work, and to-do’s ahead of ours. And I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that! In fact, it’s truly natural for us to do so!
But how about we make this the year that we DO find ways to put intention into ourselves. Filling our cup. To be Better than we were Yesterday. (see what I did there, R2P 😏)
If you’ve ever felt a twinge, stiffness, or even a sharp pain from reaching backward in the car, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to live with that discomfort. At Rehab 2 Perform, we’re bringing a new age of healthcare and physical therapy that’s about more than just fixing injuries—it’s about keeping you moving pain-free in everyday life.
Why Does Reaching Back Hurt?
The shoulder is a highly mobile, yet vulnerable joint. The way we use (or don’t use) our shoulders every day can lead to stiffness, weakness, and even irritation of the muscles and tendons.
Common culprits behind that annoying “ouch” moment when reaching back?
Poor shoulder mobility – If your shoulder lacks proper range of motion, simple movements can feel restricted or painful.
Weak rotator cuff muscles – These tiny but mighty muscles keep your shoulder stable. If they’re undertrained, your shoulder might compensate in ways that lead to pain.
Thoracic spine stiffness – Believe it or not, your upper back plays a huge role in shoulder movement. If it’s locked up, your shoulders have to work overtime.
How to Fix Shoulder Pain with Physical Therapy
The goal isn’t just to “deal with it.” We want to keep you moving comfortably for the long haul. Here’s how:
Strengthen the right muscles – Focus on exercises that target the rotator cuff, scapular stabilizers, and core to support smooth, pain-free movement.
Improve mobility – Gentle thoracic spine and shoulder mobility drills can help you reach, twist, and extend with ease.
Move smarter – Instead of straining to reach back, try turning your whole body or using your non-dominant side to switch up movement patterns.
Don’t Wait for Discomfort to Slow You Down
The bottom line? Small pains now can turn into bigger issues later. Whether it’s a shoulder tweak, knee pain, or back stiffness, Rehab 2 Perform is here to keep you strong, mobile, and feeling your best—so you can perform in life, not just in the gym.
