How I’m Celebrating Stress Awareness Month in Howard County, MD
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this season of life, it’s that mom life and stress often go hand-in-hand, and that’s okay to admit sometimes. Between the never-ending to-do list and trying to carve out a little space for myself, my stress levels can feel like they’re always on standby—ready to spike at any given moment.
That’s why I genuinely appreciate Stress Awareness Month. It’s a reason to slow down, check in with myself, and take actual steps to feel more grounded. And if you're like me—looking for a little more ease in the day-to-day—I’ve rounded up some of my favorite ways to de-stress around Howard County, Maryland.
1. Get Outside & Breathe in Some Fresh Air
There’s something about nature that immediately helps me reset. Even if the kids are running in opposite directions, just being outside helps me come back to myself a little bit. Here are a few of our go-to outdoor spots:
Lake Elkhorn (Columbia): A stroller-friendly trail, a solid playground, and peaceful water views. Easy win.
Savage Mill Trail (Savage/Laurel): Paved and easy with beautiful scenery. And yes—grabbing a bite at Ryder’s Café afterward is part of the experience.
Patapsco Valley State Park: A great spot for more adventurous hiking, waterfalls, and plenty of room to let the kids explore while I get a little breathing room.
2. Treat Yourself to a Little Zen
When the stress builds, I try to carve out intentional moments to recharge—whether that means sneaking in a quiet yoga class or booking a massage I’ve put off for too long. A few of my favorite local spots to slow down and reset:
Even an hour of stillness or movement can make a world of difference.
3. Sip & Savor Some Stress-Free Moments
There are days when a really good cup of coffee is its own form of therapy. And yes, I fully support pairing it with something sweet if needed. Here are my current favorite cozy corners:
Roggenart (Columbia & Elkridge): Amazing cappuccinos and even better pastries.
Decadent Coffee & Dessert Bar (Maple Lawn): A good place to indulge a little—no explanation needed.
4. Find Your Community (Because Momming Is Easier Together)
As much as solo time helps, I also lean hard on my village. Being around other moms who get it makes everything feel lighter. Here’s where I go when I need connection and community:
40 Plus Days of Wellness Challenge (Howard County): A great way to explore new wellness experiences around the county while supporting small businesses and prioritizing yourself.
Fit4Mom Howard County: From Stroller Strides to Body Boost, this group is all about movement and motherhood—complete with built-in encouragement.
Howard County Library Events: With storytime, baby yoga, and mindful workshops, the library consistently offers calming, low-key events for both moms and kids.
5. Give Yourself Some Grace (and Maybe a Spa Day, Too)
Let’s be honest—motherhood comes with pressure. So much of what we carry is invisible, and we don’t often give ourselves credit for managing it all. This month (and honestly, every month), I’m trying to be intentional about choosing grace over guilt. That means saying yes to little breaks, and not overthinking it. Here are a few simple ways I’m resetting lately:
Taking a phone-free walk and letting my brain just be.
Booking time at The Pearl Spa’s Healing Waters.
Enjoying a solo coffee at Lo & Co—and actually sitting down to drink it.
Embracing the occasional slow morning or spontaneous mall stroll.
Whatever your version of a break looks like—take it. Stress Awareness Month is your reminder that it’s not just okay to rest... it’s necessary.
