Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month in Howard County, MD: Events & Ways to Support

Did you know that April is Autism Acceptance Month? As a mom of two, I’m always looking for meaningful ways to teach my kids about kindness, inclusion, and celebrating differences. Whether you have a child on the spectrum, know someone who does, or simply want to show support, there are several thoughtful ways to get involved locally this April.

From community events to virtual panels and local fundraisers, here are some of the best family-friendly and educational opportunities happening in and around Howard County.

April 17 – Thoughtful Thursday Fundraiser at Manor Hill Tavern

  • Location: 3733 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD

  • Time: All day, during business hours

  • Description: Manor Hill Tavern is partnering with local charities all month long—and AUSOM (Autism Society of Maryland) has been selected as one of their April Thoughtful Thursday organizations. Every Thursday in April, dine in and vote for AUSOM before you leave. The organization with the most votes at the end of the month receives a donation from the restaurant.

April 17 – Safety Awareness Event at Safe Splash Swim School

  • Location: 19312 Montgomery Village Ave., Montgomery Village, MD

  • Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

  • Description: This special event combines fun and education in honor of Autism Acceptance Month. Hosted by Safe Splash Swim School, the evening includes an ice cream party and a guest speaker focused on water safety and inclusion. Registration is required and space may be limited, so check with the school to reserve your spot in advance.

April 24 – Webinar: Parent Panel – We've Been There

  • Location: Virtual via Zoom

  • Time: 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM

  • Cost: Free (Registration Required)

  • Description: This free, virtual event is hosted by the Autism Society of Maryland and features a panel of parents sharing their personal experiences raising children on the autism spectrum. It’s an incredible opportunity to gain insight, hear real stories, and feel a little less alone in the journey. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or educator, this event offers meaningful conversation and community support.

April 26 – Shine Brighter Together: MOCO Autism Acceptance Month Celebration

  • Location: Wheaton Regional Park, 2000 Shorefield Rd, Wheaton, MD

  • Time: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

  • Rain Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025

  • Description: This free, public event brings the Montgomery County community together to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month. More event details are coming soon, but it's a great opportunity for families to connect and enjoy inclusive programming in a beautiful park setting.

April 26 – AUSOM Adult Social Group (Howard County)

  • Location: Howard County, MD (Exact location shared with registrants)

  • Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM

  • Description: This bi-monthly social group is open to autistic adults in Howard County and beyond. Meetings alternate between virtual and in-person gatherings, and this April 26 event will be held in person. It’s a supportive space to build community, connect with others, and feel welcomed. To receive location details, participants must complete a one-time registration through AUSOM.

April 29 – Moms’ Night Out (AUSOM)

  • Location: Details shared upon registration

  • Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

  • Description: Join other autism moms for a night out focused on connection and community. This is a one-time registration event—once you're signed up, you'll receive email updates with future gathering details. It’s a great way to unwind, meet other parents, and enjoy some well-deserved time for yourself.

Every Action Matters

Autism Acceptance Month is all about celebrating the strengths, individuality, and contributions of the neurodiverse community. Whether you’re attending an event, volunteering your time, or simply opening up conversations about inclusion at home, every action matters.
