Why We Said Yes to Brain Balance: A Holistic Program Helping Kids Like Mine Thrive in Columbia, MD
What DEVELOPMENTAL reflexes, a mama’s gut, and a brand-new Columbia center taught me about whole-child development, and why I’m sharing our family’s journey with Brain Balance.
When I first walked into the brand-new Brain Balance Center of Columbia, MD, I thought I was there to check out a new local business. I was prepared to say hello, snap a few photos, and maybe write a little something about their opening.
But by the time I left, I was tearing up in the car, calling my husband, saying: “I think this is what we’ve been looking for.”
Beth, director and owner of the Columbia location—officially known as Brain Balance of Greater Baltimore—leads the very first Brain Balance center in the state of Maryland. From the moment she greeted me, her warmth felt like an instant hug. While her presence alone could have convinced me, what truly impressed me was discovering the science behind Brain Balance and the incredible impact it’s making for children nationwide.
And now, just a few weeks into the program, I’m ready to share why we said yes to Brain Balance, what I’ve already learned, and how it could help other families like mine.
A New (and Hopeful) Approach for Families in Columbia, MD
If you're new to Brain Balance, here's the gist—they offer a non-medical, holistic program for kids and adults with challenges related to focus, anxiety, behavior, learning delays, sensory processing, and more. But what really sets this program apart for me? Something I had never heard of before: developmental reflexes.
Developmental Reflexes 101: What Are They (and Why Should You Care)?
Babies are born with certain automatic reflexes, like the startle reflex or grasp reflex, that should go away by the time they’re about a year old. But for some kids, they don’t.
When those reflexes stick around, they can affect everything from:
Attention and focus
Coordination and balance
Anxiety and emotional regulation
Learning and social skills
This idea completely blew my mind… Because suddenly, so many things made sense.
At Brain Balance, they assess these retained reflexes and then work to help the brain and body integrate them, through movement, cognitive training, sensory work, and nutrition. It’s not about treating a diagnosis; it’s about strengthening the whole child from the inside out.
Why We Chose Brain Balance for Our Son
My son Grant is five. He’s curious, loving, and full of energy. He’s also been through a lot already, speech therapy, OT, special education support.
We’ve tried hard to help him, but I’ve always felt like we were treating symptoms, not the root. After hearing about the assessment process at Brain Balance, I signed him up.
When I got the results, I wasn’t shocked, but I was overwhelmed. Grant still had 8 out of 9 developmental reflexes present, some at high levels. And for the first time, I understood why certain things were so hard for him.
Since starting the program, we’ve had our ups and downs. He’s very attached to me, so those first few sessions were tough. I watched from behind the glass as he navigated new spaces, new people, and new routines.
But I’m already seeing it:
Glimmers of progress.
Emotional shifts.
Moments of confidence.
Not just in how he’s acting, but in how he’s feeling.
A Whole-Child Program That’s Changing the Game
One of the most powerful aspects of Brain Balance is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. Every child gets a custom plan based on their individual needs. For Grant, that means a combination of sensory-motor exercises, cognitive work, and a simple (yet effective) nutritional plan we can follow at home.
Yes, it’s intense. The program is three days a week at the center, with additional daily exercises to do at home. But for the first time in years, I feel like we’re addressing the why behind Grant’s challenges, not just trying to “manage” them.
This is the first program we’ve done that made me feel like someone saw the full picture. That’s what makes Brain Balance so different.
And the best part? We’re just getting started.
It’s Not Just for Kids with Diagnoses
Another thing I love about Brain Balance: you don’t need a formal diagnosis to be part of the program. Whether your child has been evaluated for ADHD, anxiety, autism, or sensory processing, or you're just noticing patterns or behaviors that feel off, you will find the assistance you seek.
For years, we’ve been told, “He doesn’t qualify for this,” or “He’s not delayed enough to get that.” It’s frustrating. But Brain Balance looks beyond labels. They look at function.
That alone makes this space feel radically inclusive.
What We’ve Learned So Far, and What’s Ahead
We’re a few weeks in, and yes, some days are hard. There are tears. There’s resistance. But there are also real breakthroughs.
Grant is already showing improvements in regulation, sleeping more soundly, and approaching social situations with more confidence. And I know this is only the beginning.
I’m planning to share regular updates on our journey here on The Columbia Mom, in blog posts, Instagram, and in our monthly newsletter . You’ll get the real story, in real time.
Because if even one parent finds this and says, “This is what I’ve been looking for,” then it’s all worth it.
