What Going on Live TV Taught Me About the Power of Social Media
A live TV experience helped shape my DMV small business social media strategy, and you may be amazed at how it can help you too!
A few weeks ago, I had the absolute honor of being featured on Great Day Washington, a local lifestyle morning show in the DMV. And let me tell you — it was so cool. I was giddy. I got my makeup done. I practiced my talking points in the mirror. I texted my mom, my husband, my best friend. It felt like a Big Deal… because it was.
But here’s the interesting thing: after the segment aired, I gained maybe two new followers.
That’s not a complaint. That’s just real data.
I didn’t suddenly get a wave of new emails in my inbox or DMs from brands wanting to collaborate. I didn’t go viral. Honestly, I’m not even sure how many people saw the live segment in real time. (Morning TV audiences aren’t exactly peak scroll hours.)
But then… I shared it on Instagram.
I posted a Reel. I added it to stories. I made a LinkedIn post. And that’s when the magic happened.
✨ My DMs started blowing up.
✨ Comments poured in — hundreds of them.
✨ People I hadn’t spoken to in years were cheering me on.
✨ And most importantly: my community saw it.
What made the moment matter? I shared it.
Here’s what I realized:
👀 It’s not always the platform itself that drives awareness.
💡 It’s how you tell the story of that moment that really sparks engagement.
📲 And social media? That’s the megaphone.
Was going on live TV amazing? Absolutely.
Would I do it again? 1000x yes.
Did it grow my brand overnight? Not exactly.
But did I walk away with content, credibility, and a deeper understanding of how visibility actually works in today’s world? Heck yes.
So what’s the takeaway for small business owners?
📸 Don’t underestimate your own storytelling power.
You don’t have to wait for a big break to share a meaningful moment. Even your behind-the-scenes content can be more powerful than a polished segment.
📣 Social media is how you amplify your authority.
Whether you're hosting an event, getting featured somewhere, or simply doing your thing — share it. People want to root for you, but they need to see it first.
💼 Visibility is not just about being seen. It’s about being shared.
A moment on TV is amazing. But when you give your community a way to celebrate with you, that’s when it becomes something bigger.
To the team at Great Day Washington — thank you for the opportunity. I’m so grateful for that experience. You gave me a platform. Social media helped me run with it.
And to my fellow business owners: post the thing.
✨ Celebrate the win.
🎉 Share the story.
🚀 Watch what happens next.
