Summer 2024 Water Activities in Howard County

Hey there, fellow Howard County moms! Summer is here, and it's time to beat the heat with some fabulous water activities that the whole family will love. From splashing around in outdoor pools to exploring indoor aquatic centers, Howard County has it all. Here are my top picks for the best summer water activities for families in our beautiful county.

1. Color Burst Park Splash Pad

  • 6100 Merriweather Dr, Columbia, MD 21044

Located within Merriweather District, the splash pad has been a favorite of ours for years! We have been coming well before all the new restaurants & retail has opened, so frankly with places like TOASTIQUE & now KYO MATCHA open, it’s the perfect little summer outing!

2. Centennial Park’s Boating and Fishing

Centennial Park is one of our family’s favorite spots for a day of outdoor fun. The lake is perfect for paddle boating and fishing. Rent paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes, enjoy a relaxing day fishing by the lake, and enjoy picnic areas for a delightful family lunch! The kids love paddling around the lake, and it’s a great way to get some exercise and enjoy nature. Plus, the park’s beautiful scenery makes for some amazing family photos!

3. Roger Carter Community Center Pool

For those super hot days when you just need to cool off, the Roger Carter Community Center Pool is a must-visit. They have a large pool with water slides and splash pad, shaded areas and loungers for relaxing, and best of all—affordable family-friendly rates. This place is a hit with the kiddos thanks to the fun water slides and splash zones. Plus, it’s a great spot for mom and dad to relax while the little ones play.

4. Cascade Falls at Patapsco Valley State Park

If you’re up for a little adventure, head over to Patapsco Valley State Park to explore Cascade Falls. It’s a bit of a hike, but totally worth it! You can hike to the beautiful Cascade Falls, enjoy a cool dip in the natural pool below the falls, and then head to the picnic areas for a family snack break. The hike to the falls is scenic and manageable for kids, and they’ll love splashing in the natural pool once you get there. It’s a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation!

5. Columbia Association Pools!

Now is the perfect time of year to take advantage of all things COLUMBIA ASSOCIATION has to offer with their memberships, especially their pools!

And when the weather isn’t cooperating, the indoor pool at Supreme Sports Club is a lifesaver. There’s a heated indoor pool, kid-friendly water play areas, and swimming lessons and family swim times. This indoor option is perfect for those rainy summer days or when you just want to escape the sun for a bit. The kids can play, and you can even join in or just relax poolside.

Tips for a Splash-tastic Summer:

-Pack Essentials: Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. OR if you’re like me: diapers, wipes, extra set of clothes, toys, water, snacks, and a meal.

-Safety First: Always keep an eye on the kids, especially around water.

-Plan Ahead: Check the facilities’ websites for hours of operation and any potential restrictions or fees.

Howard County has so many fantastic options for water activities, ensuring your family stays cool and entertained all summer long. Whether you’re splashing in the pool, paddling on the lake, or exploring a waterfall, these activities are sure to create wonderful memories. Happy summer, everyone!
