Helping Your Preschooler Get Ready for Kindergarten with Howard County Rec. & Parks

Building confidence, curiosity, and social skills before the big kindergarten milestone.

If you’re a parent of a preschooler, you’ve probably already had that moment of looking ahead and realizing, kindergarten is coming. For me, it hit hard this year. I just sent my son off to kindergarten, and my daughter entered first grade. Watching them walk into their classrooms made me both proud and teary, but it also reminded me how important those early years really are.

The truth is, kindergarten readiness doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through little moments of learning, socializing, and exploring, starting well before the first school bell ever rings. That’s why I love the preschool and kindergarten readiness programs offered through Howard County Recreation & Parks. They’re designed to give kids a solid foundation, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. And as a mom who has just lived through this transition, I can’t recommend these programs enough.

Why Kindergarten Readiness Matters

Getting kids ready for kindergarten is about so much more than ABCs and 123s. Yes, early literacy and math skills are important, but so are things like:

  • Learning how to follow directions

  • Taking turns and sharing with peers

  • Feeling comfortable in a classroom routine

  • Building independence and confidence

These skills help kids thrive from day one, and help parents feel a little more at ease too. Looking back, I can see how much the structured play, group learning, and social-emotional development my kids had before kindergarten helped them make that transition smoothly.

And that’s exactly what HCRP focuses on in their preschool-age programs: balancing early academics with hands-on, play-based learning and social development.

What HCRP Preschool Programs Offer

Howard County Rec & Parks offers a progression of programs for ages 2–5 that meet kids exactly where they are developmentally. Whether your child is still learning to separate from you or is almost ready for the big leap to kindergarten, there’s something that fits.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

  • Parent/Child Programs (Ages 11 months–3): Perfect for toddlers and young preschoolers, these classes let you and your child explore new activities together. They’re a fun way to bond while introducing your little one to group learning environments.

  • Drop-Off Preschool Readiness Programs (Ages 2–5): These classes gently prepare kids for the structure of kindergarten. Programs like Bright Beginnings (3–4 year olds), Little Explorers (2.5–3.5 year olds), and the Monday-Thursday Preschool Adventures program give kids exposure to literacy, math, science, art, and social play in age-appropriate ways.

  • STEAM Learning for Preschoolers (Ages 3–5): On Fridays, HCRP offers a Spectacular Science & Magnificent Math class that introduces preschoolers to STEM through hands-on experiments, math games, and creative art projects. Past weekly themes have included ocean animals, insects, dinosaurs, and nature, topics that kids love and that make learning exciting.

  • Extracurricular Fun (Ages 2–5): Beyond school readiness, HCRP has preschool programs in dance, cooking, art, LEGO®, and music. These classes keep learning fresh and fun while giving kids a chance to explore different interests and develop new skills.

And one of the things I appreciate most as a parent? The schedule is flexible. With options across different days of the week, families can find programs that fit, or even enroll in multiple classes for variety. Many families stick with HCRP preschool programs year after year, moving their children through the progression from age two all the way up to kindergarten.

Robinson Nature Center’s Outdoor Preschool Programs

Another gem in Howard County’s lineup is the preschool programming at Robinson Nature Center. If you love the idea of your child learning outside, these programs are a must.

Classes like Lil’ Sprouts Outdoor Explorers (ages 3–4.5) and Lil’ Pinecones Play & Learn (ages 4–5) immerse kids in outdoor learning. They hike, play, listen to stories, and explore the Children’s Garden classroom, all while building early learning skills.

What I love about Robinson’s approach is that kids not only develop kindergarten readiness, but also a deep connection to nature. They learn resilience (“yes, we can play outside even when it’s chilly!”), teamwork, and problem solving through hands-on outdoor play. Plus, these programs encourage curiosity, a trait that will serve them well long after kindergarten.

Real Impact for Families

Last fall alone, over 224 children enrolled in HCRP’s school readiness programs and 241 more participated in preschool extracurriculars like cooking, music, art, and dance. That’s hundreds of families giving their children the chance to grow, learn, and thrive before hitting kindergarten.

And from what I’ve seen with my own kids, it makes a difference. By the time my kids started kindergarten, they knew how to follow directions, ask for help, and join in group play with confidence. Those “soft skills” matter just as much as knowing their letters and numbers.

How to Get Started

If your little one will be heading to kindergarten next year, or even if you just want to give your preschooler more opportunities to learn and grow, now is the perfect time to explore HCRP’s preschool programs.

Classes fill quickly, so my advice (mom-to-mom)? Don’t wait. Even if you’re not sure which program is the exact right fit, register early so your child has a spot.

Sending your child off to kindergarten is one of the biggest milestones in parenting. It’s exciting, emotional, and maybe even a little overwhelming. But giving them the gift of strong preschool experiences makes the transition so much smoother, for them and for you.

Howard County Recreation & Parks is such a valuable resource for families in our community. From science experiments to music and movement to outdoor adventures, their programs set kids up for success by blending fun with learning in a truly meaningful way.
