Historic Charm Meets Modern Vibes: Howard County Welcome Center Reopens
From restored 1940s murals to interactive exhibits and local events, the new Howard County Welcome Center is where history, hospitality, and community come together.
If you’ve strolled down Historic Ellicott City’s Main Street lately, you may have noticed something truly special happening at 8267 Main Street. The Howard County Welcome Center, already a beloved stop for locals and visitors alike, has just wrapped up a stunning, multi-year renovation that honors the past while opening the door to a bright, inclusive, and experience-rich future. And let me tell you, it’s more than just a facelift. This is a full transformation, the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve truly arrived in Howard County.
Whether you're popping in for trip ideas, showing off our hometown to visiting family, or simply curious about local history, this newly refreshed space is worth the stop. Let’s take a peek at what’s new, what’s preserved, and why this Welcome Center is about to become one of your favorite Main Street destinations.
A Thoughtful Renovation, Years in the Making
The newly reopened Welcome Center is the result of a multi-year, three-phase renovation and restoration project thoughtfully led by the Howard County Tourism Council, Inc. With support from the Howard County Government, state and federal officials, and the Maryland Historical Trust, the project has brought modern energy and accessibility to a building steeped in history.
Phase 1 (Summer 2023): A refreshed entrance with new doors and a welcoming facelift.
Phase 2 (December 2023): A completely redesigned front lawn featuring native plants, cozy seating, and a programming-friendly green space (ideal for events, selfies, and stroller breaks).
Phase 3 (June 2025): Interior renovations to the upper level of the former 1940s post office, including polished original hardwood floors, expanded event and meeting spaces, and a whole new exhibit experience that’s as educational as it is beautiful.
And yes, if you’re into local history, prepare to swoon over details like the preserved 1942 New Deal murals, original P.O. boxes, and even a 1940s medical cabinet unearthed during the restoration. It’s history you can see, feel, and share with your kids.
Interactive Exhibits & Local Storytelling
Inside, the Welcome Center now features a permanent county-wide orientation exhibit that brings together Howard County’s story in one immersive experience. There’s something uniquely satisfying about learning the story of the place you call home, and now it’s all beautifully displayed under one roof.
Exhibits walk visitors through Howard County’s past and present, including a timeline of key historical moments and highlights of local activities and attractions. If you're raising little ones here like I am, this is a meaningful (and manageable!) way to start building that hometown pride early.
Supporting Local: More Than a Welcome, It’s a Launchpad
Visit Howard County has redesigned this space to serve as a true springboard for exploration. From the approachable new reception area to the friendly, knowledgeable staff, the Welcome Center is now built around the simple idea of connection.
Looking for a local event? Want to know which playgrounds or wineries are worth your weekend? The team will guide you based on your interests, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local mom planning your next staycation. There’s also a new retail area offering charming souvenirs and gifts, perfect for out-of-town guests or a little treat for yourself.
Even better? The Center partners with local businesses and organizations to host rotating exhibits and community programs. It’s not just a place to start your adventure, it’s a space that brings the community together.
What’s Coming Up
Mark your calendar for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 10, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Welcome Center. You’ll join County Executive Calvin Ball, community leaders, and local families to celebrate this incredible milestone.
Looking ahead, the Center will also host:
A fall art exhibit showcasing local creatives
A January 2026 installation commemorating America’s 250th Anniversary
It’s clear this won’t be a one-and-done visit, I know I’ll be coming back.
