Keeping the kids entertained indoors can sometimes feel like a challenge. If you're anything like me, you're always on the hunt for FREE, fun, and family-friendly indoor spots where the little ones can run off some energy. I've got you covered with a list of places right here in Howard County, MD, and a few bonus spots beyond. Let’s dive in!

Howard County Public Library System

This one’s a no-brainer, but it's more than just books. Howard County libraries are kid havens! From storytimes for toddlers to STEM activities for older kids, there's always something going on. Plus, the kids' areas are stocked with educational toys, games, and comfy spots to settle in with a good book. A cold or rainy afternoon can easily turn into a magical adventure here.

Here are some highlights:

  1. Storytimes: For toddlers and preschoolers, Howard County libraries regularly host Books for Babies and Preschool Parade Storytimes at branches like East Columbia and Central. These sessions include stories, songs, and fun activities to foster early literacy skills.

  2. STEAM Activities: Branches like Elkridge host hands-on activities related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Special events like Meet the Diamondback Terrapins  take place at the Elkridge branch and offer an exciting opportunity for kids to learn from Ambassadors from MD’s Environmental Service about our state turtle!

  3. Creative Arts and Crafts: Many branches feature drop-in craft sessions, where kids can create seasonal artwork, explore their creativity, and have a blast with other children.

These programs are free and encourage learning, creativity, and social engagement, making them perfect indoor activities to enjoy during the colder months.

Pro Tip: For more information on locations, specific dates, and registration, you can visit the Howard County Library System Event Calendar!

The Mall in Columbia

Yes, you read that right—malls aren’t just for shopping! The Mall in Columbia has a cozy indoor play area called the Be With Me Playseum where younger kids can burn off some steam. It’s conveniently located near the food court, so you can all grab a bite after the kiddos climb, slide, and crawl.

Pro Tip: The seasonal events, like Santa’s visits and holiday craft activities, are a hit with littles (and free to participate).

B&O Ellicott City Station Museum

While this is technically a museum, it's also a wonderland for train lovers, and did I mention it's FREE? The B&O Ellicott City Station Museum is the oldest surviving railroad station in America, and it offers a hands-on space for kids to explore and imagine. Train exhibits, interactive displays, and a cozy atmosphere make this spot a winner for a low-key afternoon.

Pro Tip: Bring snacks! There are tables outside if you want to pack a small picnic for after.

Savage Mill

Savage Mill might be known for its artisan shops, but hidden inside this historic building is a perfect day of exploring with the kiddos. Walk through the halls, check out the art galleries, and explore the old mill architecture. If you have active littles, bring along scavenger hunt lists (easy to find online) to make it a bit more interactive. Savage Mill even has their own blog on the perfect family outing at their space!

Bonus: Savage Mill is decorated for every season, so it's always picture-perfect!

Play Date at Wegmans

Yes, you read that right. Wegmans in Columbia (8855 McGaw Road, Columbia, Maryland 21045) offers free fun if you know where to look. Grab a coffee from the in-store café (you’ve earned it!) and let the kids enjoy the cozy sitting area or even take part in one of the free community events that sometimes pop up. It’s a simple, easy win for a quick indoor adventure.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for kid-friendly food demos or free samples—they're perfect little bonuses!

Tickets Required: Local Indoor Playgrounds

Do your kiddos have the wiggles, zoomies, or feel like jumping? Check out indoor playgrounds and activity centers like Kidzville MD or Hyper Kidz!

Pro Tip: Check out Facebook groups for Howard County parents to stay in the loop on pop-up indoor play dates at local rec centers or church halls.

Bonus: National Museum of Natural History (Washington, D.C.)

Okay, I know this isn't technically Howard County, but it's FREE and worth the drive! The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is always a hit with kids, especially the interactive discovery rooms and the incredible dinosaur exhibits. If you’re willing to venture a bit outside of Howard County, this makes for an epic, full-day adventure (and keeps everyone warm and dry!).

So there you have it! Don’t let the cold weather stop you from having fun with your littles.
