Fathers Day Weekend: Local Ideas & Where to Grab a Beer or Bourbon Around Howard County, MD

With Father’s Day weekend right around the corner, I’ve been thinking a lot about the dads (and dad-types) in our lives. The ones who taught us how to throw a ball, fix a leaky faucet, or simply show up with love and humor when we needed it most. If you're anything like me, you’re probably looking for something thoughtful, low-key, and local to make Dad feel appreciated. And yes, preferably with a good drink in hand.

So, I’ve rounded up a few ideas for celebrating Father’s Day weekend right here in Howard County, from classic outings to relaxed hangouts, plus some of my favorite spots to grab a craft beer or a smooth pour of bourbon.

Take Him Out for a Round of Golf in Howard County

If your dad’s idea of heaven is a set of clubs and a sunny afternoon, check out a few of these public golf courses in the area:

Hobbits Glen Golf Club (Columbia):

A classic. Hobbit’s Glen is lush, quiet, and just the right mix of challenging and fun. If Dad’s been playing for years, he’ll appreciate the layout — if he’s new-ish, it’s still friendly. Pro tip: stay for lunch at The Turn House afterward. They’ve got a solid bourbon list, and the view from the patio doesn’t hurt either.

Waverly Woods Golf Club (Marriottsville):

This one’s for the more serious golfer in your life. Waverly Woods is beautifully maintained and known for its fast greens and strategic layout. It’s the kind of course that’ll challenge him just enough to make that post-round beer taste even better.

The Timbers at Troy (Elkridge):

Affordable, walkable, and super well-kept, The Timbers is a local favorite for a reason. It’s got a relaxed vibe, but don’t be fooled — a few of those holes will keep you on your toes. Great spot for an early morning round followed by brunch nearby.

Fairway Hills Golf Club (Columbia):

Tucked into Symphony Woods, Fairway Hills is ideal if you want a quick round without driving far. It’s playable, accessible, and the staff is always kind. Plus, you’re minutes from the Merriweather District — which means bourbon or beer is never far away.

Willow Springs Golf Course (West Friendship):

This one’s out a bit farther west but totally worth the drive. Willow Springs is a links-style course, which means it’s wide open, breezy, and plays differently from the others. It's a fun switch-up, especially if Dad likes trying new courses.

Brunch and Lunch Spots

Not all dads are into bottomless mimosas and avocado toast, but lucky for us, Howard County knows how to do brunch right. Whether your dad’s a steak-and-eggs kind of guy or the kind who just wants hot coffee and a strong start to the day, these are a few solid bets:
