Unforgettable Holiday Experiences for Families in Howard County

Too Many Presents Under the Tree? Try Gifting Memories Instead This Holiday Season

This year, I’m skipping the “stuff” and filling our family calendar with local adventures, cozy traditions, and experiences that make the holidays truly magical, all thanks to Howard County Recreation & Parks.

Every year around this time, I find myself looking at our living room after the holidays, piles of wrapping paper, toys that already need batteries, and the quiet feeling that maybe we didn’t need so much stuff.

This year, I’m doing things differently. Instead of searching for the perfect gift on a shelf, I’m looking for experiences that help our family slow down, connect, and make memories that will actually last longer than the latest trend toy. And the best part? So many of these opportunities are right here in our own backyard thanks to Howard County Recreation & Parks.

Whether your family loves cozy winter fun, hands-on activities, or holiday adventures, there’s truly something for everyone. Here are a few ways we’re planning to make this season more meaningful (and a little less cluttered):

For Families Who Love to Get Moving

The Turkey Waddle coming up on November 15th at the North Laurel Community Center is such a fun way to get your family active before the Thanksgiving feast. It’s part fitness challenge, part craft session, and part just plain fun, a great way to kick off the season of gratitude.

Get energized!  Get the family twirling through inspirational dance classes that include ballet, Bollywood, line dancing, and more! And sign your adult family members up for a fitness class that helps them meet those New Year’s resolutions. (There’s everything from Abs & Glutes to Zumba to inspire!)

For Families Who Love Holiday Magic

Frozen Fest at the Robinson Nature Center (Dec. 13–14) is like walking into a winter wonderland, without the stress of traveling. There’s a Frozen-themed puppet show, winter constellations in the planetarium, a snow-track activity, s’mores by the fire, and even a Santa photo op. It’s cozy, nature-filled, and full of smiles.

For Kids Who Can’t Wait to See Santa

If your little one has endless energy, Climbing with Santa is a must! It’s such a creative twist, Santa’s “training” before Christmas, and kids ages 5–10 get to climb, craft, and play alongside him. Don’t forget your camera, the photo ops are adorable.

For the Holiday Shopper Who Loves Handcrafted Finds

Skip the big box stores and hit the Holiday Mart, where 100+ juried artisans and crafters showcase one-of-a-kind gifts, décor, and seasonal treats. I love shopping here because it feels good to support local creators, and I always find something truly unique for teachers and grandparents.

For Those Who Want a Full-Day Holiday Adventure

Howard County Recreation & Parks also offers incredible Trips & Tours for adults and families. Think Longwood Gardens’ holiday lights, a Broadway-style show at Toby’s Dinner Theater (“Elf: The Musical!”) or even a holiday shopping trip to NYC. These are the kinds of experiences you’ll talk about for years, no wrapping required.

For the Train-Lovers (Little and Big!)

The B&O Museum’s Holiday Train Garden in Ellicott City is a magical (and free) stop that’s great for a low-key weekend outing. The detailed models and festive atmosphere always spark wonder, it’s a sweet reminder of the simple joys of the season.

For Big Fun During Winter Break (While Parents Power Through Work)

Howard County Recreation & Parks keeps the kids smiling when school is “out” and work is “on.” If you are putting LEGOs, a science kit, art supplies, a magic set, or sports gear under the tree this year - keep the fun going with similar-themed programs over the winter break.

Making the Holidays Matter

As parents, we all want to give our kids a holiday to remember,  but sometimes, the best gifts can’t be boxed up or bow-tied. This year, I’m trading shopping lists for experience lists, and I hope you’ll join me.

Howard County Recreation & Parks makes it easy to fill your calendar (and your heart) with joy, togetherness, and unforgettable moments all winter long.
