If your kids are anything like mine, they are always on the move! Getting outside as a family is one of the best ways to burn off energy, reset our moods, and create those sweet memories that stick. Whether you're raising a mini mountain biker, a trail-exploring toddler, or you're just looking for a peaceful walk with a stroller, Howard County, MD has so many gorgeous spots that make outdoor time easy. That’s why I put together a list of some of the best parks and trails in the area that you won’t want to miss. 

Centennial Park

  • Location: 10000 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042

  • Centennial Park is a gem in Howard County, offering 337 acres of parkland, including a stunning 54-acre lake. The park features paved pathways perfect for walking, jogging, or biking, as well as numerous picnic areas and playgrounds for families to enjoy. Wits beautiful scenery and abundance of recreational activities, Centennial Park is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

 

Lake Elkhorn

  • Location: 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD 21046

  • Lake Elkhorn is a classic for a reason. This 37-acre lake, with a 2 mile loop is perfect for hiking and definitely biking! The 2 mile loop is flat, wide and oh-so-scenic. You’ll pass by boardwalks, bridges, and even a little playground to break up the ride. Perfect for bikes, scooters and everything in between. Lake Elkhorn also features a picnic pavilion surrounding a 23 acre park.

  • My Mom Tip: Pack some bird seed (your little ones will love feeding the ducks)!

Patapsco Valley State Park

  • Location: 8020 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21043

  • Patapsco Valley State Park is a sprawling natural oasis that spans over 16,000 acres along the Patapsco River. The park is known for its lovely trails and scenery. The park has over 200 miles of trails, perfect for biking! If you’re not so into biking or running and prefer more of a hiking vibe, they have hiker-only trials for you! The Cascade Falls Trails is a popular choice, leading to a picturesque waterfall.

 

Savage Park

  • Location: 8400 Fair Street, Savage, MD 20763

  • An underrated gem! This flat trail follows the Little Patuxent River and ends at the historic Savage Mill, which means you get nature and coffee at the end (yes, please). The park itself offers a peaceful retreat with its scenic walking trails, biking trails, beautiful greenery, and charming picnic areas. If you or your kids are into biking, a great place to check out at the park is the historic Bollman Truss Bridge. This is a fun place to teach the kiddos local history while enjoying a nice bike ride. The park also features a playground, sports fields, and a dog park.

 

Blandair Regional Park

  • Location: 5750 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia, MD 21045

  • Blandair Regional park is a newer addition to Howard County’s park system but has quickly become a favorite among locals. This park has wide, paved trails between its three entrances, making it a great place for “free range” biking while still staying close to amenities. If you’re into jogging and walking this park is also for you. Blandair Regional Park is a great place to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family.

 

Rockburn Branch Park

  • Location: 6105 Rockburn Branch Park Rd, Elkridge, MD 21075

  • Rockburn Branch Park is a beautiful park located along the Patapsco River. If you and your kids are ready to level up, then Rockburn is the place to go. You’ll find a mix of paved paths and dirt trails for mountain biking. The Pump Track is where the fun really begins. It’s designed for practicing balance, turn,s and bike handling in a super fun (but safe) space! If you or your kids aren't into biking there are so many other things to do at Rockburn Branch Park. There is fishing, hiking, jogging and walking. The park's natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.  

Kings Contrivance Loop

  • Location: Kings Contrivance Lp, Columbia, MD 21046

  • This quiet neighborhood loop offers smooth, wide pathways and very little street traffic. Great for afternoon bike rides or morning jogs. Some bonuses about this loop is you can cycle your way to the Kings Contrivance Village Center and grab some ice cream post ride! Another great thing about this location is that it is nearby parks such as Dickinson Park, Gorman Park, and Kings Contrivance Park.
